NEW YORK—The Cyprus Action Network of America (CANA) sends out its regular breakdown of news and translated articles from the Greek-Cypriot press and analysis on developments in the field of justice for Cyprus and grass-roots peaceful resistance against the Turkish racist bizonal bicommunal federation.
Below follows 5 Main articles of interest, please distribute widely and please remember to give credit to CANA and the author(s)
1) CANA IN THE NEWS
The Cyprus Action Network of America (CANA) has been cited this month in high circulation newspapers around the world, --New York Post, The Guardian UK, The Daily Telegraph, El Pais of Spain, and was practically the only Greek-Cypriot organization cited PRIOR to Jennifer Lopez’s cancellation of her performance in Turkish-occupied Cyprus. News wires such as Y Net in Israel, Russian, Polish, Dutch, Spanish, French major networks, and literally hundreds of news sites, celebrity news sites and blogs spanning almost every country and language in the world. Just this past Thursday CANA Press officer, Nikolaos Taneris’ letter “Turkey uses Cyprus as port of Terror” was published in The Washington Times. And today Taneris’ letter was also cited by the influential Hoover Institution Hoover Daily Report: http://www.hoover.org/news/daily-report
The Hoover Institution is influential in the American conservative and libertarian movements.
Following last week’s Press Release “TURKISH EMBASSY HITLER SALUTE” , numerous Jewish-American and Israeli news outlets contacted us and the CANA Press Release has been reproduced along with the CANAgrassroots You Tube videos on the following influential sites in the US and Israel PLEASE SEE LINKS BELOW:
CANA was also cited and quoted extensively by Daniel Greenfield  , born in Israel but now living in New York City he is a writer and columnist for some major publications, here is the link:
The site “Real Americans Defend Israel” also cited and quoted CANA today:
Jewish-American conservative writer, humorist, and political commentator Julia Gorin, cited CANA and Savvas Iacovides’ analysis “We need a Defence Cooperation Agreement with Israel” in two separate follow up articles:
NOTE: The Cyprus Action Network of America will soon be issuing a comprehensive press breakdown as the ONLY Greek Cypriot organization in America cited worldwide in the international press and news wires PRIOR to Jennifer Lopez’s cancellation of her performance in Turkish-occupied Cyprus. CANA with pride is the most widely published and cited Greek-Cypriot organization in America and there is no stop in sight.
2)  Following Jennifer Lopez, Cercle Brugge cancelled visit to the occupied and apologies
Cercle Brugge,  the Belgian Football Association was organising a visit to the Turkish occupied area of the Republic of Cyprus set to take place next week. When news reached the Greek Cypriot football Association  “Anorthosis” of Ammochostos, the latter immediately contacted the Belgium Cercle Brugge enlightening them of the situation and action was also coordinated through the Embassy of Cyprus in Belgium through the Cypriot Foreign Ministry. As a result of this coordinated action the visit to the occupied has been cancelled.
after learning of the true facts and the ongoing Turkish invasion and occupation of that part of the Republic of Cyprus to its credit,  Cercle Brugge not only cancelled but has posted an apology on its website which reads as follows:
SORRY
«After careful deliberation, Cercle Brugge has decided to cancel the visit of the occupied part of Cyprus . Cercle Brugge also wants to sincerely appolagize to the directors and supporters of ANORTHOSIS FAMAGUSTA for, totally unwillingly, having mentioned this sensitive subject. We never had the intention to hurt or shock anyone!
We are looking forward to the two sportive games we will be playing against each other».
“Anorthosis” wishes to warmly thank the Directors of Cercle Brugge for their action and the cancellation of their trip to the occupied  but also for their understanding of this delicate matter which does not affect only “Anorthosis” but the whole of Cyprus .  “Anorthosis” has arranged for the mission of the Belgium team and their supporters to visit the Civil Centre of Ammochostos Municipality in Dherynia in order to be fully informed of the ongoing Turkish occupation of Cyprus .

3) Why Papandreou and Christofias need to go to Israel
Article by leader writer in “Simerini” newspaper in Cyprus Mr. Savvas Iacovides 11 July 2010 – www.simerini.com
Greece and Cyprus are at a critical political, economic and military crossroad. Due to decades of dissipation and especially the last few years Greece has deteriorated economically and politically.  Turkey, the Skopjians, the Albanians, they all declare aggressive intentions against her. Despite the efforts of Athens to facilitate Turkey’s EU accession negotiations, especially Ankara, is accelerating her expansionist demands against Greece. Weakened militarily and dependent economically, Greece today is not in a position to face up to an excessively arrogant Turkey, which intensifies her intentions on all fronts and demands not only a peripheral role but aims at a future super power role.
Turkey is attempting to change the status quo in the wider Middle East and elevate itself to the defender, protector and the mouthpiece of the Muslim and Islamic world.  For the U.S.A despite the occasional crisis, Turkey remains a significant strategic ally whilst Turkey already doubts the other powerful factor in the Middle East, Israel.  Turkey has taken advantage and used the last incident with the activists. The last incident with the activists to Gaza, has been used excessively by Turkey in order to weaken and de-legalise the state of Israel and at the same time, to claim a reformist role in a new order in the area.
From the other hand, Cyprus, under Turkish occupation (since the invasion in 1974) and under threat by Turkey, is in deep illusion preoccupied with impassive negotiations which, gradually and due to naïve and bent ideological perceptions of President Christofias, is drawn towards de-recognition and negatively towards uplifting-recognition of the pseudo state. Turkey had made it clear since 1956 and very recently through Davudoglou: “Even if not one single Muslim Turk was in Cyprus, Turkey ought to retain a Cyprus issue. No country can stay indifferent towards such an island, which is placed in its vital area (…).  It is necessary for Turkey for strategic purposes to be interested in Cyprus besides the human factor (…)”. The dangers hanging over Hellenism are nationally deadly. Greece and Cyprus have nowhere to look for. Wolves and hyenas are standing ready to snatch and grasp more national land. Two hundred or so years after the Greek Independence and fifty of that of Cyprus, Greece and Cyprus are faced with the worst dangers for their survival.
Napoleon the Great, speaking at his Council, made the following great statement: “I became a catholic to end the war in Vendée.  I became a Muslim to impose on Egypt. I became a pro-Pope to win the clergy in Italy. And if I were to rule the Jewish people I would not hesitate to  re-build the Solomon Temple”. The Greeks do not need to become… Jews but to learn from the example of Napoleon the Great. Taking into account the economic, political and military weakening situation both Greece and Cyprus have found themselves these days, they do not have many choices but only one and powerful: To reach out to Israel and enforce, and further develop  their ties and relations on all aspects, especially on the defence and military cooperation and their relations on other areas. Information from different sources indicate that, after the very serious crisis and the un-restorable relations between Turkey and Israel, Athens has at long last began some approaches towards Jerusalem.
Doing the right thing, Greece seems to be taking advantage of the crisis in the Turkish-Israeli relations and is investing in stronger military ties with Israel as well as in the area of information. Papandreou seems to be investing in a more radical reinforcement of Greece’s relations with Israel through a strategic coalition agreement, seemingly to re-generate and bring Greece back to its original position as a power in the area of Eastern Medeterranean.  It is more than clear that the serious economic crisis that has kneeled Greece, has forced Athens to turn towards reinforcing its already good relations with Israel, whilst Papandreou, according to a Jewish think-tank with a good echo towards the Israeli Government, has turned towards Jewish economic giants to save the Greek economy. From the other hand, good sources from the U.S.A state that the leadership of the Greek-American lobby, following the crisis with the activists to Gaza and the crisis in the Turkish-Israeli relations, has thickened its contacts with the leadership of the Jewish Lobby (Jewish Committee).
“It is a historical opportunity for the Greeks”, we were told by a high ranking official of the Greek-American lobby. “The USA are questioning whether Turkey is really still a trustworthy ally. We believe this is now a big opportunity to develop and reinforce even more our relations with Israel”.  It is already well known that the Jewish lobby in the USA has terminated all relations with Turkey and stopped all assistance towards the Turks. On the contrary, it has turned towards the Greeks, because the Israelis regard Greece and Cyprus as the only democratic and free countries in the Middle East which are inundated by Muslims and Islam. The same sources informed us that during the forthcoming Annual Conference of the Greek Cypriots Abroad to take place in August (2010) the President of the Jewish lobby Mr. David Harris is expected to attend.
Reasons of high priority vis-à-vis security, military, economic, political, national and of biological survival for Hellenism in facing the resolute aggressive objectives of Turkism dictate that G. Papandreou and D.Christofias visit Jerusalem the soonest possible. To draft strategic  agreements and cooperation agreements on all areas. It is a unique opportunity, when the interests and anxieties of Israel, for its own security and survival, tally with those of Greece and Cyprus. Papandreou and Christofias are called upon to act and take advantage… yesterday, of this unique and historical opportunity.
Translated by Fanoulla Argyrou (London).
4) Ignorant Cameron and pathetic Christofias, Translated from Greek to English below:
Leader article by Costakis Antoniou, Simerini 29.7.2010
Ignorant Cameron and  pathetic Christofias
The English, whether Conservative, Labour or Liberal Democrats are all the same, they remain provocative, historically inadequate and turcophiles, through their “golden age” with Turkey.  Without the slightest of change in their policy over Turkey and Hellenism in Cyprus. David Cameron’s pro-Turkish outburst, his historically negligent statements, confirm not simply his turcophilia but also their cunning policies against Cyprus. Those we have lived through, and those we will live  through.
“When I think about what Turkey has done to defend Europe as a Nato ally, and what Turkey is doing today in Afghanistan our European allies, it makes me angry that your progress towards EU membership can be frustrated in the way it has been", stated the historically negligent English Prime Minister.
When did Turkey become the defending-angel of Europe, for Cameron to praise her today? When she retained her skilful neutrality vis-à-vis the fascism of Hitler? When she collected the American dollars and the English sterling and at the same time turned the blind eye to the Soviets? When, pretending to be the “bastion of the West”, she cashed on the tolerance of the English and the Americans for the slaughter against the Hellenism of Constantinople, of the Cypriots, of the Kurds and of the minorities in Turkey?
Did Cameron hear nothing of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, for the continued for 36 years occupation of land of a country –member of the European Union? Has he never heard of un-enforced Ankara Protocols, and he feels “angry” because some European countries frustrate Turkey’s EU entry negotiations?
However more anger is felt by the Greeks in Cyprus, listening to Cameron violate so cruelly History and become the stooge of neo-Ottomanic dream of Ankara.
We heard nothing here from the Cyprus Government, not a hint of protest  for all the British Prime Minister stated. President Christofias did not manage one single word and did not try to correct all those historical distortions so provocatively Cameron stated. He did not remind him at all of his country’s responsibilities and the fact that it was Britain which first dragged, on paper and on the ground the partitioning line of Cyprus. He did not remind him at all that Turkey, as an aggressor and occupying force, is not allowed entry into democratic Europe, nor that Ankara has undertaken to fulfil some obligations, as precondition to her entry into the European Union. Obligations that she has not fulfilled.
If President Christofias abandoned to one side the courtesies and spoke with the language of truth to Mr. Cameron, he would have created the adequate scepticism and adequate interest of the British Public Opinion, and also within the European P.O. But, is it time now to reveal the true face of Turkey?
The leaders of this country remained, as always, pathetic viewers of the rhetorics and actions of the “evil demon” of Cyprus…” (“Evil demon” translates to Gt. Britain, President Christofias older statement).
5) PSEKA’s Full Page Folly
The Cypriot government funded organization PSEKA and its affiliates took out a full page ad in The New York Times last weekend. Reportedly such ads cost in the area of $120,000 (we feel sorry for the poor Greek Cypriot taxpayer) and almost a week later the only American   news citation this costly “full page ad folly” gained was one (1) blog entry. This brings us back to what Christopher Hitchens wrote in his famous article way back in 1995 about the failure of the so-called Greek Lobby in America, the only difference with 1995 and last week is that now the price for the “full page ad folly” has literally doubled
“Then there is the occasional humiliation of what is known in the trade as "the full-page folly." It costs up to $56,000 to take a whole page of The New York Times as an advertisement. Every now and then, the baffled reader of that newspaper is flipping through and sees an old photograph of a refugee camp in Cyprus, say, or a coin minted by Philip of Macedon. Underneath is some text, usually about half of it in grammatical English, stating an inalienable Greek claim. There might be the name of some indecipherable organization, or an exhortation to write to the President of the United States and tell him all about how you feel. And that’s it. No follow-through; no education; no "enlightenment." This really upsets the hard-working Hellenic press officer I cited earlier, whose whole annual budget is a fraction of the above figure and who can hardly take an honest reporter for a souvlaki. "There are commissions on those full-page ads. That’s where the money goes. It’s everybody taking their cut. It’s a rousfeti." I feel his pain.”—Christopher Hitchens writing in Dead End: Greek Lobby in America:
The following analysis is provided by Fanoulla Argyrou:
“I may be cynical but allow me to comment as follows:
The ad is carefully worded so as to conceal all those things IT OUGHT TO DEMAND and evidently DOES NOT.
This ad is placed by PSEKA the organisation funded by the Cypriot purse to enlighten abroad on the Cyprus issue. Therefore and although in its second part it does number those things Turkey did, in its third and most vital part  AVOIDS DEMANDING THOSE THINGS IT OUGHT TO DEMAND OF TURKEY, the aggressor.
1)     Demands the immediate withdrawal of Turkish troops from Cyprus but says NOTHING about the immediate withdrawal of ALL SETTLERS which as the ad numbers correctly in part two exceed 160,000.  Why, because President Christofias, pledged to accept 50,000 of them (initially?) and because Turkey needs them to seal the vacuum left by the uprooting of the 200,000 refugees whom they do not want to return?
2)     Calls upon Turkey to support the reunification of Cyprus and self-governance of the entire island. What does that mean exactly if not the “re-unification” of the two “constituent states”? Because Cyprus was never a country in two parts so as to… re-unite, but one Republic of Cyprus . How do they interpret the “self-governance” in one  Republic?
3)    They spare not a word in their claims about the missing persons, the enclaved, the restoration of our 500 or so churches desecrated by the Turks, the return of the 200,000 refugees to their homes and they jump the fence to… call upon Turkey to lift the Casus Belli clause against Greece, to allow the Ecumenical patriarchate…, to negotiate with the Kurds and be a … partner in peace and understanding in the E. Med!!! Why on earth did they have to include all that when they missed the essentials required by their  MANDATE and PURPOSE IN EXISTENCE? I have no problem in supporting all these but I find it out of order and out of their MANDATE for PSEKA (International Justice Committee for Cyprus) to refer to such matters when its sole reason for coming into being is the enlightenment of the Cyprus problem. And this ad has failed to do the minimum.
4)     Avoids the most crucial point: To call upon Turkey to respect the human rights of all Greek Cypriot refugees which she violated with the invasion and make good by allowing them to return. Not a single word about that most crucial point and which is the core of the problem and why the Cyprus issue is still an open wound. What is the point of referring to the ousting of 200,000 people and their ethnic cleansing if you DO NOT CALL UPON TURKEY TO REINSTATE THESE PEOPLE AND RETURN THEIR STOLEN PROPERTIES.
It is regrettable the least to read so many articles written especially in American newspapers, blogs, websites, by distinguished authors, writers, journalists, academics about Turkey’s criminal record on Cyprus and who promote all those elementary demands for proper justice for Cyprus. Yet, what do we find? So much hesitation in doing just that from organisations of our own, that have been set up to defend the violated human rights of our people! One such in the link below. The author does not mince his words. A big thank you to all these distinguished people who albeit circumstance are helping in enlightening the world of the true facts about the Cyprus issue and what is really going on in Cyprus since 1974.
After all nothing is static in politics and thanks to the flotilla incident on one hand and the Jennifer Lopez on the other, the barbaric invasion of Cyprus and ongoing brutal occupation of half of our country by Turkey and the crimes committed by the Turks, are brought back to the front line of world politics. And all that despite the despicable efforts of London which LEADS the strategy on Cyprus aided (as always) by American politicians who follow - especially the anglophile group that exists within the American political establishment in Capitol Hill – and takes care of that…
These are the articles that Cyprus is crying for but  finds no fingers to hold the pen for and not for bizonal bicommunal federal racist TURKISH solutions…
Another leader article in Simerini of Cyprus 29 July 2010 by journalist Costakis Antoniou  “Ignorant Cameron and pathetic Christofias” is a strong indictment of the failures of our leaderships. The article ends saying: “… If President Christofias abandoned to one side the courtesies and spoke with the language of truth to Mr. Cameron, he would have created the adequate scepticism and adequate interest of the British Public Opinion, and also within the European P.O. But, is it time now to reveal the true face of Turkey ?
The leaders of this country remained, as always, pathetic viewers of the rhetorics and actions of the “evil demon” of Cyprus …”  (“evil demon” is a slogan for Gt. Britain once exclaimed by President Christofias himself!).
It seems the same applies to  our American “leaderships”…
Well, my original reservations even before seeing the actual ad are not only justified but confirmed.
Thank you, Regards Fanoulla Argyrou. “
