Το χριστουγεννιάτικο άγχος της βασίλισσας
Με αφορμή τη μαγνητοσκόπηση του χριστουγεννιάτικου μηνύματος προς τον βρετανικό λαό, οι τεχνικοί θυμούνται το άγχος που είχε η Ελισάβετ όταν στεκόταν απέναντι σε κάμερες.
Η βασίλισσα ανέβηκε στον θρόνο το 1952. Κι αυτή ήταν η πρώτη φορά που απεύθυνε χριστουγεννιάτικο μήνυμα στον βρετανικό λαό μέσω ραδιοφώνου σε «ζωντανή» μετάδοση. Από εκείνη τη χρονιά το έχει επαναλάβει επί 60 συναπτά έτη. Είναι ένα έθιμο που το καθιέρωσε ο παππούς της βασιλιάς Γεώργιος Ε’ το 1932 και το συνέχισε ο πατέρας της Γεώργιος ΣΤ’, ο οποίος προσέλαβε λογοθεραπευτή να ξεπεράσει το πρόβλημα ομιλίας που αντιμετώπιζε.
Εξήντα χρόνια τώρα η βασίλισσα Ελισάβετ απευθύνει το ετήσιο μήνυμά της στον λαό της και έχει καταφέρει να αλλάξει το... άτεγκτο ύφος της και να γίνει πιο γλυκιά και προσιτή. Λέγεται μάλιστα ότι ήταν τόσο αγέλαστη και νευρική που ένας καμεραμάν αναγκάστηκε να αναρτήσει κάτω από την κάμερα το μήνυμα «Σας παρακαλώ! Χαμογελάστε!».
Η βασίλισσα παραδέχτηκε ότι ήταν τρομακτικά νευρική όταν αναγκαζόταν να «γράψει» το μήνυμά της κι έτσι ανέλαβε ρόλο... floor manager ο πρίγκιπας Φίλιππος. Πότε της έκανε γκριμάτσες πίσω από την κάμερα, πότε της έλεγε αστεία πριν αρχίσει τη μαγνητοσκόπηση... και τι δεν έκανε. Ωστόσο μία ήταν η καθοριστική στιγμή... όταν την είδε πανικόβλητη να στέκεται κι έτσι της έδωσε ένα χαρτάκι. Εκείνη το διάβασε, χαμογέλασε κι αυτό ήταν... Τι της έγραφε; «Θυμήσου το τρίξιμο των δοντιών». Φημολογείται ότι μία φορά ο πρίγκιπας κυνηγούσε τη βασίλισσα μέσα στο Ανάκτορα φορώντας αστεία ψεύτικα δόντια κι εκείνη γελούσε τόσο πολύ, που ήταν μία από τις πιο αστείες στιγμές τους.
Τώρα πια η βασίλισσα είναι γελαστή γεμάτη αυτοπεποίθηση και δεν κλείνεται στο γραφείο της, αλλά ζητάει από τους υπεύθυνους να βγουν στον κήπο ή να μαγνητοσκοπήσουν σ’ ένα ωραίο δωμάτιο του «σπιτιού». Στη διάρκεια των μηνυμάτων προβάλλονται βίντεο από όμορφες οικογενειακές στιγμές, ή από τις περιοδείες της βασίλισσας και το ετήσιο έργο της.

She pats her hair — snowy white now — and sucks barley sugar to soothe her throat. This was the scene a few days ago before recording her annual message, which also includes highlights of her year, filmed a few months ago.
The Queen ascended the throne in 1952 and broadcast her first Christmas message — live on radio — that year. She has continued to do so for almost 60 years, carrying on a tradition begun by George V in 1932 until his death in 1936 and subsequently taken up by her father George VI, who famously overcame a stressful speech impediment with the help of speech therapist Lionel Logue.

Today’s messages have changed dramatically and are no longer the painful ordeal they were for the Queen early on, when she was criticised for appearing sombre and stilted — BBC executives once placed a notice on one of the cameras saying: ‘Smile please.’
The Queen admitted to being ‘frighteningly nervous’, but Prince Philip tried to help by clowning out of camera range. He once passed her a note saying ‘Remember the gnashing and wailing of teeth’, referring to a time he chased her through the palace corridors with a set of joke false teeth.
Today, a smiley, confident Queen no longer speaks solely from her desk at a royal residence. There are family scenes, royal tours and specially shot footage. The 2003 message was the first to be filmed on location, at the Combermere Barracks in Windsor, while the Queen writes her own script with input from Philip and her Private Secretary and without ministerial advice.
Cameraman Philip Bonham Carter, who worked on 36 of the Christmas broadcasts, says: ‘Things seldom go wrong.’ But he recalls one occasion in 1987 when filming the Queen at the Royal Mews.

‘The Queen was talking to the camera when suddenly I noticed a horse directly behind her head which was curling its lip, showing its teeth and looking as though it was mimicking her words. It also looked as if it was nibbling her ear.
‘We had to re-shoot the scene. The Queen thought it was very funny.
‘Filming is pretty relaxed. The Queen is not at all nervous, never stumbles over a name and is incredibly good at it — a professional. We usually need only one take. It is not a jokey, slap-on-the-back time and it can be slightly nerve-racking because the broadcasts are serious stuff and she is often talking about wars and tragedies.
‘The broadcast had already been recorded at the time of the Lockerbie disaster on December 21, 1988, and we realised this would have to be included, so the Queen added a piece on sound only.’

One technician feared the advent of colour broadcasts in 1967 would make the Queen look ‘sort of boiled’. And Sir David Attenborough, who made the broadcasts between 1986 and 1991, vetoed the Queen’s choice of an ‘eyeball-searing’ green dress in 1988 because it would clash with the Buckingham Palace wallpaper.
Her then Private Secretary William Heseltine commented that the alternative would be to re-paper the room.
‘Re-paper the room! Have you any idea what that would cost?’ thundered the Queen. When Attenborough explained it was just a joke, she replied: ‘In that case, it was a very bad one.
